Your child’s smile goes through a lot of changes from their first tooth to the day they get their braces off (if they need them). Understanding what to expect at each stage can help you support their dental health along the way.

The Baby Teeth Stage (Ages 0–3)
What’s Happening: Most babies get their first tooth around six months, with a full set of 20 primary teeth by age three.
How to Care for Their Smile:
- Wipe gums with a soft cloth before teeth emerge.
- Brush with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste.
- Schedule their first dental visit by their first birthday.
The Wiggly Tooth Phase (Ages 6–12)
What’s Happening: Baby teeth start to fall out, making way for adult teeth. This is also when molars begin coming in at the back of the mouth.
How to Care for Their Smile:
- Encourage proper brushing and flossing habits.
- Watch for overcrowding or misalignment as new teeth emerge.
- Consider sealants to help protect molars from cavities.
The Braces Years (Ages 9–16)
What’s Happening: As adult teeth settle in, many kids need orthodontic treatment to correct bite issues or spacing problems.
How to Care for Their Smile:
- Keep up with regular dental cleanings to prevent plaque buildup around brackets.
- Encourage the use of a water flosser or orthodontic floss threaders for easier cleaning.
- Limit sticky and hard foods that can damage braces.
